Israel exempts pregnant women from military service, including reserve duty.

Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has conscripted both men and women into its military. Given the unstable security situation surrounding the nation from the early days of its founding, it was interpreted that both genders were necessary for military recruitment.

Women in Israel serve for 24 months, while men serve for 32 months. Around 4% of Israeli female soldiers are involved in combat roles such as infantry, artillery, and armored units, while the rest primarily serve in non-combat roles such as administration, communications, and air traffic control.

However, women can be exempted from military service due to reasons such as marriage, pregnancy, or pursuing higher education, with approximately 40-50% of eligible women estimated to serve in the military. Additionally, if a woman becomes pregnant after completing her military service, she is exempt from all remaining reserve duty.

Israel emphasizes its policy of conscripting both men and women into the military as a "true people's army" and a symbol of the nation or a microcosm of the nation.

reasons why women should be drafted into the army:

 

1. South Korea is the only divided country in the world and is technically at war with North Korea. Considering that North Korean women are required to serve seven years of mandatory military service, South Korean women should also fulfill their national defense duties alongside men.

 

2. Requiring only men to serve in the military is a form of gender discrimination and is in violation of the South Korean Constitution.

 

3. Given that women can serve as non-commissioned officers, ROTC officers, and in other capacities, the argument that women cannot serve as enlisted soldiers is illogical.

 

4. Due to the low birth rate, South Korea is facing a shortage of soldiers. In 2023, the active duty determination rate(현역판정률) for South Korean men was over 91%. Considering it was 82.8% in 2016, this indicates that men who are not suitable for service are being conscripted as active duty soldiers.
