[ENGLISH SPEECH AND COMMUNICATION] Who I Am Story

지하철 5호선 2026. 7. 9. 20:56

Hello,

My name is 000000 Oh, and I am an English major senior student. This semester, I am taking six English major classes including Writing (2), Speech Communication & Speech Debate. All six classes are conducted in English.

When I tell people that I am majoring in English, they often ask, "Are you good at English? 너 영어잘해?" I always respond, "ummmm I think I'll be good at it by the time I graduate.졸업하면 잘할것 같아요" Ha Ha. The truth is, my English is poor. Attending classes, speaking, writing, and doing assignments in English is very challenging for me. So, I complete all my assignments in Korean first and then translate them into English. I sometimes feel as if I were Korean Literature student. This process takes nearly twice as long compared to native English-speaking students. Writing (2) class, in particular, is the biggest challenge and suffering in my life right now. The topics discussed by the professor are very profound and academic, to the point where I seriously suspect this class might be graduate school PhD course. To do a close reading, I had to read the articles twenty times.

Additionally, I stutter a lot, so presentation assignments are also a huge burden for me. Although my GPA from two of my previous universities was 4.4 and 4.3. my current GPA at Yonsei University is 3.1. As I approach graduation, I thought about my career path and reflected on my past.

In the past, I studied aircraft maintenance at a junior college but I wanted to go to 4 year university. so, I quit junior college and went the Yonsei. Here, I realized that I am not cut out for English major and that I really missed airplanes. I am now a Yonsei SPACE Y aviation club member. I design model aircraft, print them, assemble them and actually fly them. Through this club activity, I realized that I have talent and passion for mechanical works and engineering jobs. I can handle SPACE Y tasks much more easily than English assignments.

Next semester, I am going to be qualified to graduate English major. So, I plan to pursue a minor in Mechanical Engineering next year. I believe I will be the best English-speaking student among the Mechanical Engineering students. By earning Yonsei English major and Engineering minor, I believe I will become a competent, well-rounded aerospace engineer.
